Is the International Driver's Permit (IDP) valid in Canada?

IDP is valid for 1 year in most countries and you can renew it. IDP is a translation of your driver's license from another country into several languages. To use IDP in Canada, you must have a valid driving license from another country.

This document is sometimes called an "International Driving License" or "International Driving Document". Some of our users have reported that companies are trying to sell fraudulent (false) documents with similar names.

Only a few organizations are authorized to sell International driver's permits. For example, in Canada, only the International Traffic Control Association (ITCA)  can issue IDPs, and the application fee is only euro 30. To ensure that you are getting the correct, official documents, it is a good idea to check with the Government Department of Transportation before paying for the IDP.

You must apply for an IDP outside of Canada. IDPs issued in Canada are not valid in Canada.

Visitors to Ontario primarily use IDPs. If you plan to live in Ontario - that is, you will be a permanent resident residing in Ontario - you must obtain an Ontario driver's license within 60 days of moving to Ontario.
