Your International Driver Permit (IDP) is a travel document regulated by the United Nations. This certifies that you are a valid driving license holder in your country of origin. IDPs are a requirement for vehicles in many countries and can help you when you need identification or assistance from local authorities.
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and includes your name, photo, and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world - it is owned by most local authorities and officials in those countries It makes sense for you to go.
By no means does this reduce the obligation of the holder of a valid driver's license and passport with them at all times while driving overseas. A valid IDP does not allow you to drive if you are not carrying a valid driving license and passport of your country of origin at the same time.
Applying/Obtaining An International Drivers License through ITCA
ITCA allows you to apply for an international drivers license online. To do that, you will need to have the following documents:
– Scanned copy of the applicant’s current driving license.
– A High-Res Passport Size Photo (You can get this done at a local photo-studio).
– Scanned copy of the applicant’s passport.
– Other documents they require for verification (Usually visa copy, etc.)
If you apply via ITCA, the fee will be US$ 34+. This is one of the easiest ways to apply for an international drivers license, but also the most expensive. So, if you’re on a budget, we recommend applying via the Zonal RTO or via WIAA.
Other Points To Remember For An International Drivers License
– An international license is an important document. Please keep it safe just like how you keep your passport.
– If you lose your international license, kindly report it to the Indian embassy if you’re abroad. Also, inform the local enforcing authorities of the country you’re in.
– If you lose your international drivers license locally, you will have to file an FIR at your local police station.
– You will not be able to obtain an international drivers license unless you have a valid visa of the country/territory you’re visiting.
