International Driving License Planning on driving abroad?

The rules for international driving License permits are changing. Check what type of IDP you need so that you can ensure that you can drive legally when you travel to another country. From 28 March 2019, some countries will stop recognizing the 1926 and 1949 IDPs issued by the UK. Instead, you may need a 1968 IDP to drive in these countries.

What is an IDP?


An international driving permit is a permit that allows you to drive in countries where a UK license alone is not enough. These countries include the United States, Brazil and Japan.

 

Do i need one?


An IDP is required or recommended in more than 140 countries. Use our IDP checker tool below to check the requirements of the country in which you plan to drive.

 

How do I apply?


Locate your nearest post office branch using our branch finder tool. If presenting an old paper edition license, bring your fully valid UK photo-card driving license, a passport size photo and your valid passport as proof of identity.

What do you need when applying


Complete valid UK driving license - photocard or old paper license
A passport size photograph - a recent true likeness of the applicant
£ 5.50 application fee (cash or debit / credit card)
An original valid passport as proof of identity, if an old paper version presents the license
