International Driving Permits are issued by the same authority that issues your national driving licence. This means you need to get one before you travel. You can’t get one from the country you’re visiting.
In Britain you can apply for an International Driving Permit from the Post Office, AA and RAC. If you're from a different country, check online where you can apply for yours. If you do it in person, it takes a few minutes and you normally need to bring:
- Your national driving licence.
- A passport photo.
- Proof of your identity and address (such as a passport or national ID card).
- Money for the fee (typically between £5 or €5 and £20 or €20).
The permit lasts a year and works alongside your normal driving licence, so do take both with you when you travel. An International Driving Permit is simply an official translation of your licence, and it does not replace your licence in any way.
