International Driving Permit in New Zealand

Take the test

If you have a current driving license, you can legally drive for up to 12 months in New Zealand. If the license is not in English, you will need to do an accurate English translation.

In New Zealand you can legally drive for up to 12 months if you have an International Driving Permit that is issued in English or translated into English, provided you also carry a current drivers license which is based on the permit.

All drivers including visitors from other countries in New Zealand must carry their license or permit at all times while driving. You will only be able to drive the same type of vehicles that you are licensed to drive in your country. The normal legal age to rent a car in New Zealand is 21 years.

Translation of your foreign license or permit can be issued by:

A translator approved by NZ Transport Agency.

A diplomatic representative in a high commission, embassy or consulate; Or
Your foreign license issuing authority (an international driving permit may be acceptable as a translation).
It is important to note that if you are caught driving without an acceptable English translation or IDP, you may be prosecuted for driving without a license or for driving without a suitable license. If you are convicted in court, you will be liable for a violation fee of NZ $ 400 or up to NZ $ 1,000.

The police also have the power to refuse to drive a driver without a license unless they have the appropriate license. If you continue to drive even after being prohibited, the vehicle you are driving will be stopped for 28 days at the owner's expense. You may also be at risk of not being covered by your insurance in the event of an accident.
