How to get an international driver's license in India

 Validity of an International Driver's License


As an Indian citizen, a valid international driver can not drive in a country outside India without a license. If you are behind the wheel then this is a compulsory document. Primarily, the Zonal Regional Transport Office (RTO) is responsible for issuing legitimate international driver licenses to individuals. With an international driver's license, one person can rent / drive vehicles when traveling to another country.

Notes Fact and points for the International Drivers License


- An international driver's license is a permit-document.
- The validity of an international driver's license is 1 year.
- It is required by an Indian citizen if he is visiting a different country and is planning to drive there.
- In some countries, Indian driving license is accepted, although it is always recommended to obtain an international driver's license. The reason for this is, it is always easy to claim insurance if you have an international driver's license.
- Printed in many languages ​​including an international license, but not limited to: English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Portuguese etc.
- International driver license is valid in more than 150 countries worldwide.

Receiving / receiving international driver licenses


Receiving an international driving license takes anywhere between 2-7 working days. You can apply for anInternational Driving License at the following locations:

- Regional Regional Transport Office (head office of RTO in your city / district).
- WIAA (Western Indian Automobile Association).
- ITCA (International Traffic Control Association) website.
Document You Need To Get An International Driver's License (Zonal RTO & WIAA)
ITCA allows you to get an international driver's license online. However, doing it this way is more expensive. Zonal RTOs or WIAs are cost effective and do not require many documents.

Let's take a look at the documents you need to apply for an international driver's license through Zonal RTO or WIAA.

- valid driving license.
- Secondary permanent address proof (basis, passport).
- Secondary Identity proof (basis, birth certificate, ration card).
- Passport of the applicant (passport must be valid)
- Passport size photograph (Photograph should be recently)
- Applicant's visa + ticket (Visa should be current and valid)
- Form CMV 1 & 1A (medical condition). (available online)
- Form CMV4 (Application Form) (available online)
All of these forms mentioned above are different for different states, so make sure you download the correct before going to zonal RTO.
Applicable fees for obtaining international driver license through Zonal RTO 1000 for WIAA and Rs. 1500
However, in order to obtain an international driver's license from the WIAA, you must be a member of the WIAA. It is possible only in some cities.
Receiving / receiving international driver licenses through ITCA
ITCA allows you to apply online for licensing of international drivers. To do this, you must keep the following documents:
- Scanned copy of the applicant's current driving license.
- A high-pass passport size photo (you can get it in local photo-studio).
- Scanned copy of the applicant's passport.
- For other documents they require verification (usually visaapplying via the Zonal RTO or via WIAA.

Other Points To Remember For An International Drivers License 

– An international license is an important document. Please keep it safely just like how you keep your passport.
– If you lose your international license, kindly report it to the Indian embassy if you’re abroad. Also, inform the local enforcing authorities of the country you’re in.
– If you lose your international drivers license locally, you will have to file an FIR at your local police station.
 You will not be able to obtain an international drivers license unless you have a valid visa of the country/territory you’re visiting.
